STAR Symposium 2017 – Call for Proposals

There’s still time to submit a proposal to present at the STAR Symposium! This is a state-wide conference focused on teaching and learning best practices. The all day conference is completely virtual – attend and present from your home or campus office. 

Call for proposals is open until November 21.  All presenters will receive training related to effective web-based presentation.

Share your Ideas

Do you have an innovative approach for engaging your students, managing your classroom, integrating best practices or collaborating for improvement? This is your opportunity to share the innovative work you’re doing at your institution, for your department and in your classroom! The STAR Symposium Planning Committee is seeking proposals  related to best practices and innovation related to teaching, technology, course design, faculty support, etc. for face-to-face, blended, and online courses and/or programs. Check this list for ideas for topics:

– Faculty Development and Support
– Course Design and Delivery
– Grading, Assessment and Feedback
– Student Engagement
– Technology Integration
– Measuring the Impact of Best Practices
– Other Innovations…

The committee is seeking both 50 minute and 25 minute presentations which will be offered concurrently. Individuals looking for information about the types of sessions offered last year are encouraged to review the STAR Conference Guide. (http://bit.ly/STARGuide16)

To submit your proposal, please complete this form. The conference planning committee will review all proposals and will contact everyone regarding the status of their proposal in December.

Registration for the STAR Symposium is managed by Northland Community & Technical College. To register individuals or a group, use the STAR Symposium Registration Link (opens in a new window). The cost to attend the all-day conference is $50 (presenters pay $25).

Yesterday at noon D2L hosted a webinar on using QM™ Standard One in your D2L Brightspace course to set the tone. Three instructional designers from University of Maryland College shared their experience and best practices.

Free Open Online Course: Designing Digital Media for Teaching & Learning

This four week long open course (digitalmediaeducation.org – Join here) offers different paths of engagement with digital media. You will be using free tools to create, implement, and assess digital media for teaching and learning.

The course started this Monday, October 10, and will be running until November 6. It requires about 2-3 hours of work per week. There is also a possibility of getting a certificate from ISTE Teacher Education Network. The course is designed by faculty and graduate students at the University of Massachusetts Amherst College of Education. They also lead a Google+ Learning Community (for which a gmail account is needed).

Lynda.com Video Library

Lynda.com is an online training resource that offers thousands of video tutorials in various areas such as technology, business, software and creative skills. Training modules are available for Microsoft Office (2013, 2016 and Office365), Adobe Creative Cloud, graphic design, e-learning, social media, customer service, project management, and much more.These videos can be used as supplemental material for classes or a learning database for students. In addition, LinkedIn purchased Lynda and is offering learning opportunities to their users through this integration.

Even though our SCSU Library currently does not subscribe to Lynda, these resources can be accessed for free with an active Great River Regional Library card.

  • Instructions on how to obtain a GRRL card for free.
  • If you already have a GRRL card, go to the Great River Regional Library web site. Click on Databases in the navigation and locate Lynda.com in the list of databases. Log in using your GRRL barcode and PIN. (Note: You must access Lynda.com via the GRRL web site.)

Other county library sites such as Anoka, Dakota, Carver, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington also provide similar free access to Lynda.com with an active library card.

SIG Webinar: Creating a Community: Using D2L Brightspace to Welcome Students

For students starting a new course it can be intimidating knowing where to start. In both online and face-to-face courses it is important for learners to get to know one another and familiarize themselves with the course’s navigation, resources and tools. This session will introduce strategies you can use in Brightspace to engage learners at the beginning of the course. Examples include news items, scavenger hunts, icebreakers and virtual tours. These strategies will help your students feel connected and informed as they move forward in your course.

From D2L Gradebook Tool to ISRS

Faculty can use the D2L Brightspace Gradebook to upload their final class grades to the E- services website (ISRS) quickly and efficiently, thereby saving an estimated 15 hours per semester. SCSU’s Academic Technologies Team -D2L Administrators and Instructional Designers – will demonstrate how the Gradebook integrates with E -services. Following the session, instructors can arrange an individual session with one of them for further training and support.

Kaltura MediaSpace: Media creation and sharing tool for faculty

MediaSpace™ by Kaltura, available to all SCSU Faculty, allows users to record audio, video, or capture anything on their computer screen. The recording can be then streamed and shared in a D2L Brightspace course shell or via email. In this session, participants will learn how to make the best use of this tool in their work. In addition, they will be able to arrange an individual training/support session with one of the SCSU Academic Technologies Team’s MediaSpace™ trainers.
