(#FunFriday) Silent Disco?

So, call me sheltered but I had never heard of a silent disco until recently. According to Wikipedia, the concept was first introduced in 1969 in a sci-fi movie called Ruusujen Aika, “A Time of Roses“. And as it turns out silent discos have been going on since the 80’s in Europe. In particular the Glastonbury Festival has made good use of the concept in order to comply with noise regulations. And right down the road from us in 2012, SilentArena and Live Nation held the biggest silent disco event ever in America with over 3000 headphones at the River’s Edge Music Festival on Harriet Island.

Here is a quick video of a silent disco event during the Midsummer Night Swing dance party at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York.

Universities are another common place to see a silent disco. Princeton has a fun site setup showing off their recent event here. So my friends, what about SCSU? #What If… we get UPB together with the IT and Library folks and we have a silent disco in the Library! Wouldn’t the juxtaposition of a dance party and rows of books be cool? Okay, okay… maybe that’s too nerdy. Well, once warmer weather hits it’d be a fun event for the Atwood Mall too.

(#FunFriday) One Pound Fish

A while back I posted a video for Fun Friday showing a mom-son combo dancing to Gangam Style. Well… time for another one! One thing I think is great about this video is that is caused Pakistani authorities lift their ban on YouTube temporarily so that fans could watch the video. NPR has a nice article on Shahaid Nazir’s rise to fame on their site here: ‘One Pound Fish’: A Pakistani Man’s Passport To Fame.

(#FunFriday) Draw a Stickman

Stickman

Here is a fun website for you to check out, http://www.drawastickman.com.  The idea is pretty simple.  You draw a stickman (or woman, or sponge bob, etc.) and help your new stickman solve a few problems.  The site has been around for a while now, but if you haven’t tried it out before I think it’s worth a visit.  On October 26 they’ll be releasing a full blown game.  Looks like fun, check out the trailer below.

(#FunFriday) I’m an Investor!

So, I’m not so much the next guy that’s going to make it big on the NYSE, but I have contributed my hard earned cash to a fun startup, more on that in a bit.  One of my favorite new sites is Kickstarter.  Kickstarter is a fantastic site that is bringing great ideas to life and allowing creators and inventors a place to succeed.  If you have a great idea and a knack for marketing Kickstarter is for you!  Here is how Kickstarter describes itself.

Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative projects that are brought to life through the direct support of others.

Okay, now back to my investing antics.  A month or so ago I came across Honey Badger BBQ Sauce.  Now, as a guy that enjoys humor, creativity, and food – I was sold.  I created an account and donated to the project.  Soon, I’ll be watching my front doorstep for my very own jar of Honey Badger BBQ Sauce.  You might not be a foodie like me, but there are loads of fun projects out there sure to appeals to a very diverse audience.

I heard on the radio that October is the worst month for pedestrian accidents.  The revolights project is for bikers, but it is geared toward safety.  Plus, I think bikers are just as much in danger as pedestrians from the texting and driving maniacs out there.  Have you come across a Kickstarter project that convinced you to contribute, or at least one that peaked your interest?  If so, let me know in the comments.

Here is a fun video of Revolights cruising the Stanford campus.
