So this week there have been a lot of discussion about Donald Trump’s choice for education secretary. There had been so much information all over social media regarding his pick for education secretary. Donald Trump has said “that he may want to get rid of the department of education all together.” (cnn) His choice for Department of Education Secretary, Betty Devos will help him do that. President Trump has made a number of controversial cabinet nominations already. This seems by far the most inappropriate choice of DeVos to lead the Department of Education.

My biggest concern is that DeVos isn’t an educator, or an education leader. She’s not an expert in pedagogy or curriculum or school governance. In fact, she has no relevant credentials or experience for a job setting standards and guiding dollars for the nation’s public schools. (washingtonpost) Working in the public school and going back to school majoring in special education I am questioning what the next four years of public schools will look like?

She is, in essence, a lobbyist — someone who has used her extraordinary wealth to influence the conversation about education reform, and to bend that conversation to her ideological convictions despite the dearth of evidence supporting them. Wealth should not buy a seat at the head of any policy-making table.
