Favorite Social Justice Topic

To me my favorite Social Justice Topic is people who are Transgender. I will be honest and say that at first I was scared of this concept even though I am part of the LGTBQ community. I guess I was scared because being gay and trying to find love at the time that I did not fully see how a person is a person and that does not change if they find out who they really are. I remember when I met a guy who revealed to me that he was Transgender and around  17 began having surgery. At first I was terrified because of lack of understanding. Also when I saw the scar marks under his breasts I was again scared but then I felt ashamed when I saw his face. When he told me how he once had to leave a pool because he felt as if he could not be out in public because some parents gave him dirty looks. How when he went on dates he saw the moment they did not want to be with him because of who he is. I got interested and learned more about it and realized how so many kids who are transgender get kicked out of their homes and in many ways abused on the streets or by opportunists who see a child who is vulnerable or businesses who turn them away. These stories need to be told because we need to appreciate each other and try to become better. By not talking about it we are forcing people to live a life where they can get hurt and no one deserves that.

Social Justice Topics for Consideration

Atheism –

I am interested in the topic of Atheism even though I am a person who is raised as Roman Catholic. Many of my friends were atheists and I care about them deeply. My boyfriend told me he was an atheist and it is interesting to see his side of things from a romantic perspective than a friendship perspective. I did struggle with this at first because it was just something I did not fully understand. I am interested in the topic because I have had seen my friends get treated badly for being atheist. One story in particular was a store we were going into and apparently the owner knew she was an atheist from a conversation we were having and didn’t like that me being a christian was friends with her and asked us especially my friend to leave. This is the main story I would like to tell because it is wrong to discriminate against us who were just kids at the time for simply being friends who had different belief systems. These systems were not even bad or practiced something wrong. I do not like how many atheist are told they are going to a lake of fire when they die or do not deserve love on this planet while they are alive because they do not worship God.

Anti-Muslim Business Practices –

I am interested in this because I remember discussions we had in my foreign policy class. I loved how the discussions made us view both sides of an argument and see why people think what they do. I remember when I was driving in St.Cloud a person through coins from their car at what seemed to be a Somalian man and said ” Get out of St.Cloud and then said F*** refugees”. I do not even know if this person was homeless or if they were even practicing the Muslim faith. What matters is that this random person felt the need to make a person feel so degraded because they assumed a person being Muslim was bad. One thing I loved about St.Cloud was because I got to go to classes and meet a bunch of new people from places I never have seen and hear their side of the story. I think this should be told because it was just insane to me to see a person degraded in such a way publicly under the assumption of their belief system. I loved the campus that embraced this diversity and seeing how someone less than a couple blocks away could do something so in human.

Technology Literacy Narrative Prewriting Questions

1. What early experiences with technological devices or artifacts can you recall?
What do you remember about your earliest use of technologies? Or what stories
do your parents tell about your interactions with technology? What were the
popular gadgets in your house while
growing up?
I think the earliest device I can think of was using the gameboy and using a Nintendo 64. I remember hanging out with friends and sharing games and trying new ones. I know my mom noted how I would read one second then go on the gameboy the next. The most popular devices we used were our phones and Xbox’s. I also used my Nook Color a lot to since it was my most favorite thing to use.
2. What’s on your desk at home? What technological devices are you carrying with you now? What’s on your technological “wish list”?
On my desk right now is my laptop. The only device I carry on my is my Iphone. On my wishlist I would like to get a new tablet.
3. How, when, and why do you use the technology on your desk? the technology

you carry?
I usually use my technology to get work done if it is on my desk or play games. When I use it is mostly early morning and the afternoon. Reason for doing so is that is when I feel most active and can get things done. When using the technology I carry I usually keep it in my pocket and put headphones in. When is mostly random times throughout the day. The reason I think is that my phone is more of a as need basis.
4. How do you learn new technologies? What process do you go through? Is it hard,

fun, easy, traumatic, boring, annoying, or some combination?
I learn most new technologies by simply messing with them and exploring it through tutorials or games. My process is somewhat random. I rely on my intuition yet will seek help when needed. I think it’s all of things stated above in terms of feelings. It is a lot of fun when you get the hang of it but can be annoying when something goes wrong. Technology is only really traumatic if it didn’t do what its stated to do or is to complicated.
5. Think of a time when you first encountered a specific technology. What

happened, and how did it affect you?
The first time I used GIS or Geographic Information Systems. It was amazing and astounding on what can be done with it yet it is a very complicated process to get a desired result when using the technology. I found myself constantly rereading to understand concepts that need to be exact to work. It affected me in a good way I think. It taught me the importance of understanding how technology isn’t all knowing and needs human guidance often to get the result that takes a human to long to completes on his or her own.
6. Think specifically of computer technology. Try to remember a specific

computer technology that excited or angered you. Why did this technology
have this specific impact on you?
Once again I will refer back to GIS for computer technology. It excited me so much when you ran a tool and you saw your map work exactly the way you needed it to. It angered me greatly when it simply didn’t work and you realize somewhere along the line you made a mistake and must go back. Why it had an impact is that it you realize that perfection is an extremely hard thing to reach and their will always be a flawed map. It humbles you I think.
7. For instance, have you had a particular experience with emailing when things went better or worse than they might have if the communication had been face to face? What happened, and why do you think this communication worked better or worse than it would have had you been talking face to face?
Emailing a friend on how to do a project comes to mind when things went down the tube. We were discussing on how to write and Environmental Impact Statement for a class. It seemed all of us knew what to do but because of a mistype which happens to us all we didn’t know as much as we needed to write about. This caused us to come back and do more emailing to find an answer as to why are paper wasn’t as long as it needed it to be. I think if this happened in person we probably would of said everything right away and noticed the error prior. Talking to a person directly makes things more urgent so that you can see a person’s expression in case of confusion.
8.If you’ve used Instant Messaging, texting, chat or Snapchat, Skype or Zoom,

when and how do you use it, and what sorts of effects has it had
on personal relationships
I use mostly Snapchat out of all of these. I use it mostly to message friends or my boyfriend. I think on personal relationships Snapchat is an amazing thing. Being able to chat with your friends real quick and stay connected in a fast way is awsome. I think for the most part it makes life better. However their are times when it can make one feel isolated and left out when in reality its just someone is doing something you currently aren’t.
9.If you’ve used chat, think about your first experiences with it. What happened, and how did you feel about it?
When using chat I think it works pretty well. However their have been negative expierences when I was starting to go on dates. On Snapchat their is a way for friends to see where you are. Well that works great for friends but a friend can also be someone you just went on one date with. I found myself being constantly messaged my a guy who wanted to know where I was. At first yeah it was funny but turned into something where I couldn’t even go to a different building was being messaged about it. I wasn’t happy because a person who I barely knew had the ability to know where I was to a good degree.
