Hi Everyone,
I am quite passionate about this book and it is one that I recommend to absolutely anyone and everyone who asks me for a book recommendation. So if you’re looking for a beautiful story and do not mind reading my slightly ranty thoughts, please keep reading for my spoiler-free review.
This story is so incredibly beautiful, powerful, and heart-breaking. It completely sucked me in, and although it is a long one, I absolutely could not put it down.
This novel follows a woman who has been giving immortality, but the catch is that for the rest of her eternal life, everyone she meets is going to forget her. Throughout this novel, we follow Addie as she lives her life flashing back and forth between the 1600s and present day. Addie meets lots of people, all who forget her the second she walks out the door, and each time is as heart-breaking as the last.
Personally, as the story went on, I was so attached to Addie and wanted to see her happy, and as every person she sees forgets her I found myself even more devastated than Addie herself. And as it keeps happening over and over again, all I wanted to see was Addie find some sort of happiness. Addie LaRue is one of my favorite characters from all the books I read and I find myself wanting to pick up this novel and reread it just so I can be with this character again.
Like I said before, this is a long novel, and I have heard some criticism of people saying that the book was too long, but personally I got the feeling that I never wanted it to end. This novel is more character-driven than plot-driven (although not by much) so if you are someone who needs more of a plot to keep you interested, this novel might feel a little too long for you.
My only criticism of this book is the fact that we travel such a wide-period of time with this character who cannot die, and in the specific time period she lives a lot of things happen in the world. So many things happened in the world from the 1600s to present day that were obviously so important to where we are today, and I think that it would have been very impactful had we seen Addie participating in certain events, one that comes to mind is the women’s rights movement. However, I know the book would’ve been insanely long had the author included such things as this.
Overall, this is one of my favorite books of all time and if it sounds even relatively interesting to you I recommend picking it up and giving it a read!
