Top 5 Places to Eat in Alnwick

Quick Taste of Alnwick

Picking only five places to eat in Alnwick is difficult. Within walking distance of the castle to the far side of Alnwick, you will find a huge range of food. Every student will tell you the best place and will argue with everything I list in this blog. But the list below is correct and I will stand by my choices. *Note: I have no dietary restrictions or aversions, but most places within the UK will have options for vegan and gluten-free individuals. So some of these items may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but these are my favorite places to go to in Alnwick.

  1. Costa Coffee
I am starting this list out with coffee. But Jake, coffee is not food. I am obsessed with coffee and so number one will always be coffee. Large Latte for take-away please! If you are a Caribou or Starbucks person, this is similar as it is a chain coffee place. They have a great seating area if you need to get out of the castle to do school work or just to relax. Now if you are strictly a tea drinker, they have tea but this is not about tea. If you want to know about tea, you can read our previous post. But coffee is better.

Abroad Experience in Alnwick, England

Ashlee had the experience of a lifetime while in Alnwick, England. In the Fall semester of 2019, she had the opportunity to stay in the Alnwick Castle, which also happens to be a St. Cloud State University campus. This unique program is a great introduction to traveling. As a group, SCSU students, faculty, and staff work together from beginning to end. They fly over, live, take classes, and sometimes travel together. Fortunately, Ashlee connected well with her classmates and still tries to get in touch once a month, to relive their cherished memories.

Some of her favorite memories are from her group and individual excursions around Europe:

  1. Hadrian’s Wall: This long stretch of wall was visited by her class and professors. She said, “I was just trying to embrace everything that was coming at me. We had no idea where we were going, but our professors did. I felt alive. It was such a powerful moment.”

Things to Do in Malaysia

So we’ve talked about what to eat in Malaysia in our previous post, but Malaysia is more than just amazing food! We have beautiful islands, mountains and so much more to offer!

Explore/ Visit Islands

  • When I say I was shocked when I see clear blue ocean water I wasn’t joking. I always thought you can only see such clean and blue ocean water in the Maldives or Hawaii, but I was wrong! I went to Redang Island with my friends and was absolutely blown away by the view and the crystal clear water!
  • Redang Island is one of the biggest Islands in Malaysia and is also part of the “coral triangle” between the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. This makes it the perfect location for snorkeling as you can see up to 80% of the various marine species in the world! If you are more adventurous, take advantage of the scuba diving courses as Redang Island offers over 20 different dive sites including ship wrecks and more! There are other recreational activities that you can do too, such as Turtle watching, boat chartering, sand volleyball etc.
  • I’d suggest finding an all-inclusive resort so you do not have to worry about finding places to eat as most accommodations are resort-based and the restaurant options are limited.
  • Other Island options: Langkawi Island, Perhentian Island, Tioman Island

International Students: Dental and Vision Insurance

There are new dental and vision plans offered through United Healthcare Student Resources.

How to purchase the optional Dental/Vision insurance through SureBridge:

Access the information at https://www.uhcsr.com/. The student should enter the school they are attending. Review the information for each plan and request a quote. The student will enter their Gender, Birthday and if they use tobacco. They will then enter the zip code for the area that their school is in and select Get Quote. They will choose a benefit level if they choose the Prime DVH plan. If interested in the insurance, the student can select add and they will be prompted to enter their school email address. The insurance company will then communicate with the student to get them set up.  The student will select their appropriate school and then scroll down to find the Voluntary Vision/Dental option. Once they click on this, the available plans can be viewed and a request for a quote can be made. If the student chooses to purchase one or more of these plans, they will have the option to enter their student email address and the company will contact them to set up coverage.

There is no deadline as these plans are available for purchase year round. There are certain stipulations that apply to the coverage in regard to when the plans will start to pay towards more extensive procedures. Please make the students are aware so that they don’t think they can purchase the plan in the case of an emergency and expect coverage.

Food you NEED to Try in Malaysia

By Cassidy Ng

Malaysia is a small country sandwiched between Thailand and Singapore and is full of diversity, various cultures, languages and not to mention, the FOOD! We have 3 different main races – Malay, Chinese and Indian. As a Malaysian student studying abroad, the things I miss most about home is, well, obviously my family and the FOOD! If I get a dollar every time I say food when people ask me about Malaysia, I would be a billionaire by now. So here we are, starting our Malaysia To-Do list with FOOD!

  1. Malay
Gosh, where do I even start? There are so many options! As we have 3 different races in Malaysia, we get to try each culture’s food! Starting with our National dish – Nasi Lemak! You have to try this when you are there because you didn’t travel to Malaysia if you didn’t try it out! Nasi Lemak is a Malay cuisine – rice cooked with coconut milk, served with ‘sambal’, toasted peanuts, cucumber and fried anchovies, egg and is fully customizable. Some people like to add curry or fried chicken, squid sambal, or beef rendang onto it to add more flavors. My personal favorite is with the squid sambal, it’s a little spicy so I like to eat them with the rice to reduce the kick haha

    Nasi Lemak

Best Place to get Nasi Lemak:
    Village Park Restaurant
What to Order: Nasi Lemak with Fried chicken
Malaysians rave about this restaurant and there is always a crowd during lunch/ dinner time so go early before their fried chicken is out!
