“Body image is the perception that a person has of their physical self and the thoughts and feelings that result from that perception.”

When I think about my own personal body image, I’d say I have overcome a lot of struggles, however, the media today is making it more difficult to accept how I look. Girls around the world are constantly facing the mirror, wishing they looked more beautiful, more busty, and more thin. Not only does this wishing turn into a lifestyle, but it also can develop into several eating disorders. Whether it be binge eating, anorexia, or bulimia, the amount of time women spend worrying about the way they look is astonishing. And where does this come from? In my opinion, the unrealistic ways in which the media objectify women. Women are told they should cover themselves in the best facial concealer, most expensive fake-eye lashes, and be perfectly tan, however they should be revealing when showing off their body by skimpy, sexy clothing. But as a result, one’s peers are judging them for being too “fake” or too “slutty”, therefore how does one ever win? In recent research, it all comes down to a healthy, and happy body image. The Butterfly Foundation is a program that educates people about body image, eating disorders, and provides resources for those to get help. Check out the website for more information.
