iTeachELLs

Nationally, almost 5 million English Language Learners (ELLs) are enrolled in school-based programs, 85,000 of which are in Arizona. A lack of qualified teachers, coupled with commonly held misconceptions about ELLs, makes educating these students one of the biggest challenges facing the public-school system today.

This suite of modules will highlight why teachers need to rethink roles in light of this growing subpopulation and explore ways to modify lessons to address the needs of ELLs.

American schools are becoming more diverse and teachers are less likely to have white, standard-English speaking students. As a result, teachers need to understand the roles of language and culture as they intersect with cognition.

ELLs are the fastest-growing student population in the country, growing 60% in the last decade, as compared with 7% growth of the general student population (Grantmakers for Education, 2013).

In-Class Observations

The following video is an example of incorporating Disciplinary Discourse into a math lesson. Rather than simply present the formulas, the teachers have created situations that require the students to think, write, and talk about the mathematical concepts and reasoning they used to get their answers.
