impact of social media on economy

Does Social Media have a rightful say in economy? What is the SM impact on business

  1. In the last 24 hours, you may have heard about two events having impact on the economy:
    1. On Wednesday, Kylie Jenner (as of Kylie from the Kardashians) tweeted:”Sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me… ugh this is so sad.”
As a result, Snap (SNAP) stock closed down 6% on Thursday after the reality TV star said she is no longer using the app. The plunge wiped about $1.3 billion off the company’s market value.

The issues of Snapchat itself, are very revealing and useful for LIB290 to discuss and you are welcome to do that in a different LIB290 FB discussion.
For now, we want to discuss the impact of SM on business
    2. The impact of #boycottnra on business
As in the past, I will ask you to focus on the social media, issue, not on the political issue. While you are allowed to express your stance and convictions, please do it in a restrained and collegian manner and of your class peers happen to disagree with you on that political issues, please debate in an academic spirit.
Here is the snapshot of the analytics for #boycottnra in the last 24 h

  1. the President’s tweets
It already has been widely discussed the impact, which Trump’s tweets have had on stocks, markets, and business in general (again, if you have a strong opinion about this, focus on the social media, not on the political aspect of the discussion)

Here are some leading questions to start a discussion, but you are most welcome and encouraged to ask your questions and seek answers with your peers:

  • Is it right that SM has such impact on business (e.g. a whimsical, in case of Kylie Jenner, or angry, in case of Trump, remark can plunge stocks)?
  • Does SM really have an impact on business (opinions were shared that in a long term, the business recuperates)
  • Should SM be “regulated” in terms of its impact on business?
  • Do you think, you, personally, can have an impact on business. If not in the same magnitude, yet some impact?
