What the SCSU HiEd program did for you in your career: It gave me the language and skills to go further in my career. I now know what HLC and assessment are and the role they play for college and University. I have been able to develop better programs and experiences for students based on the assessments I have run. This program also helped me gain the confidence to go for my career goals and to know I belong in my role. This program has been such a huge part of my career path.
Advice for current HiEd students: Remember to enjoy your time in the program. We have such great faculty that care so much about Higher Ed and us as students. Don’t ever hesitate to reach out to them if you need extra help with a section or run into issues. Also, take every opportunity to hang out with your cohort outside of class either in person or virtually. My favorite moment of the program was talking with everyone while tailgating at Husky events! It makes being in an online program feel more real. And it’s the best way to try Dr. McCullar’s smoked food, which is the hidden perk of the program.
Fun facts about you: I love to make homemade pasta at home. There is something so relaxing about making your own noodles! I am also always changing up my hair color, that way students can always find me. Just have to find the person with bright fun colored hair on campus.
Tell us about the journey and decision to pursue and attain your new position: After graduating from SCSU this spring I had planned to stay at my previous university till the end of the academic year. That way, to give me a year to find a new position that would be a step up in my career aspirations. During the late summer and beginning of fall, I saw a lot of positions open up. I know how hard it can be to find the right job let alone when looking to make a step up. So I started applying to jobs that were in areas I wanted to live and would be the right fit. I was looking for a smaller college or university. When I saw the Director of Residential Life open up here at Northland, I got extremely excited and applied immediately. (let’s just say I screamed for joy when I was offered an in-person interview) During the interview process, I really made sure to see if this was the right place for me and would be a match for both the college and myself to work out. At the end of the day, it was the perfect position for me. I am so excited to make my mark here and help students.
Parting thoughts (“Words of wisdom”): Be yourself through the program and find a job. You want a place to accept you as an employee and you need to feel comfortable putting your best work out there. Higher education is hard work, make sure you take care of yourself. It is easy to forget especially with all the challenges we are facing now. But put down the computer and phone sometimes and do the things you love. Even if that dying your hair pink. If you are at the right place, they will encourage this as much as possible and will invest in your being your best self.
