Many schools have gone online since Coronavirus/Covid-19 began. Although this was the best response to ensure students’ health and safety, online classes can be more difficult for some students. In this article, we give you some tips to help you be successful in your online classes.
Time Management
Time management is key when taking online classes. Unlike face-to-face classes, you do not have scheduled class times where you can listen to lectures or learn material. You will need to put time aside to learn the material and study. It helps to make a to-do list or a schedule book for study times, readings, and assignments. This will be the easiest way to prioritize your work and classes. This will help you submit homework on time and be ready for exams. Do not forget to limit any distractions while working on your classwork to maximize your time.
Check Your Emails and Login to Class Daily
It is important to get into a habit of checking your school e-mail and online class daily. All of your communication will be online, instead of in class. If you do not check-in frequently, you might miss announcements, feedback, instructions, discussions, or other important information. You do not want to miss this information. You may want to set a reminder on your phone to check every day until you develop the habit. Adding your school’s e-mail to your phone and downloading any online course apps available will also help with communication.
Actively Participate and Network
Online classes include creative ways to stay connected to your classmates and instructor. There are video meetings, online discussions or forums, chat, and even group work. You might even take an online class with a friend or two. Staying connected with friends and classmates can help you reduce stress and keep you motivated. You might even be able to create a virtual study group. Your teachers are also available to you if you need extra help with homework or understanding materials. Remember to reach out when you need it.
Set Goals
If you create goals for yourself, it will be easier to stay motivated. It will also help with your time management because you will need a plan to reach your goal(s). You can have more than one goal. For example, you may be taking the course to complete your degree. You might need the degree for your dream job. Another goal may be increase your GPA by doing well in the class. Or, you may want to take the class to learn additional skills. If you understand how this class fits your goals, it will keep you motivated.
Use Online Resources
Check with your teacher and your university for available resources. Many resources are free and available for students. Some of these resources may include apps, virtual office hours, virtual tutors, videos, tutorials, library resources, technical support and free software. Make sure you take advantage of resources like these to maximize your success.
