We asked the IEC students, who were experiencing their first spring break abroad, a variety of questions:
- “How did you spend your spring break?
- Did you visit any specific places or participate in particular activities?
- If you had any new experiences during spring break, which one was the most memorable?
- Also, did you happen to set up any academic-related goals or plans for spring break?
- If so, what were they, and what efforts did you make to achieve them?”
Most students responded that they traveled together and engaged in various activities during their spring break.
“we went to Cancun in Mexico at this spring vacation. This place is located southeastern Mexico. It’s known as resort so some people go to here as honeymoon.we stayed at all inclusive hotel. It means food, alcohol and some activities are included. That was amazing. We went to Isla mujeres. This island is so small so you can rent a golf cart and circle it in an hour. Do you know the Disney movie Remember Me? If you know what our mean, it’s a place where that world has become a reality. The new thing we learned was to dive into the world of a language we knew nothing about. we can speak English because we studied it in class when we were in Japan, but the official language in Mexico is Spanish. The U.S. is a very far away place for us as a Japanese, but Mexico really made me feel like we had come different world. Also, the Mexican people are very cheerful, and people we didn’t know at all, like, “Ora! Also we found people everywhere playing music and dancing. Although we did not set any specific academic goals for spring break, we are confident that this experience will definitely benefit our future.”
“we went to Mexico with other friends. The most memorable experience for us were the balloon ride in Mexico! It was our first time. we don’t have a specific goal in mind but we wanted to improve our English until we could interpret. we went to Mexico, a country where Spanish is the official language, and the only way we could communicate was to use English. However, many of them did not speak English at all, and those who did were invaluable. There are really few English speakers in Japan, so we wanted to help foreigners in need when we returned to Japan.”
“I visited Las Vegas during spring break. I went to the Grand Canyon and saw the beautiful mountains. I also stayed at an American friend’s house! The most memorable thing was watching “KA” by Cirque du Soleil, and it was my first time watching their performance. It was amazing!” “This semester, I want to get better at English, so I’ll try my hardest!”
