Anne with an E Season 1 Episode 1

Based on the novel Anne of Green Gables by L.M Montgomery, Anne with an E on Netflix follows the adventures of the young Anne Shirley, a quirky and smart thirteen-year-old who has had a rough start. The first episode introduces many of the classic book characters as Anne finds her way to Green Gables amidst a mix-up at the orphanage where she originally lived. There she meets Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a pair of older, unmarried siblings. They had been expecting a boy to show up–someone strong who could help Matthew on the farm–so they don’t immediately accept Anne and argue about whether to send her back. The pilot episode focuses on this conflict and Anne’s determination to get the Cuthbert siblings to keep her.

Aside from centering on a female perspective, the first episode of the show is not very diverse. All the characters in the first season are white and, although there is a brief exploration of a character living as a lesbian in the 1900s towards the end of the first season, the show doesn’t become diverse until later episodes. These episodes introduce characters of color, including a black man dealing with racism in the second season and indigenous characters in the third season. Additionally, season two devotes more time to portraying LGBT+ characters in greater detail.

Despite having a devoted fanbase and impeccable writing, the show was canceled after its third and final season despite the outcry from both the fans and creators. The reason for the cancellation, like so many other great Netflix adaptations, was because the show didn’t have a large enough audience. However, even though the show was canceled, people shouldn’t be dissuaded from giving Anne with an E a watch. The actors and creators put their all in the final season to make sure it was a satisfying conclusion to Anne’s tale.

This show is great for fans of L.M Montgomery’s original work and those who are unfamiliar with the novel. Although there is no other series quite like this one, fans of Little House on the Prairie may also find Anne with an E enjoyable. Anne is a charming character that is sure to delight audiences of all ages, especially those looking for a show that delights in the lighthearted moments of life while showing the humanity of our struggles.

  1. Anne With An “E” is enthralling with absolutely exquisite talent and actors so very exciting and comforting to experience especially in awful Covid29 historical times! I am strengthened by this wonderful Show – when will “continued” (Episode 1) episode be televised – not to be missed – and continuing viewing and relied upon for mental health? Thank You for so much literature and understanding !!!
