Everyone is breathing a sigh of relief that the elections are over. The last six months were a pain to look at the various news networks and different candidates vying for your vote. All of the votes have been counted and now there are a lot of new, fresh faces in office. In this year’s 2020 election cycle, more LGBTQ+ people of color are being elected into office more than previous years. With that in mind, I will talk briefly about one of the newest trans person to be State House of Representatives in Kansas.
Stephanie Byers is the first openly transgender Native American person elected to office in the U.S. She ran against Jim Ward in a heated election this year.
Before running for office, she taught at Wichita North High School for 29 years before retiring in 2019. She’s served on several committees and conferences. Byers served on the board of Wichita Pride from 2018-2020 and was the Communications Director and Board Secretary.
Byers has a strong vision for the citizens of Kansas and transgender folks. With this win, she vows to make changes within the laws of everyone and making everyone united. For more information about Byers, you can visit her website here https://www.byersforkansas.com/
