January 11, 2014 at 4:35 am (11 years ago)The study on which the article is based, “Short and Long-term Effects of a Novel on Connectivity in the Brain” (http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/pdf/10.1089/brain.2013.0166), describes the science of the study in considerable detail. I’ve often felt that reading fiction is important for both mental acuity and emotional stability. This study confirms the former; I wonder if anyone is studying the latter. I’ve averaged reading a novel every 14 days for the past 40 years–more than 1000 novels–while continuing a fairly heavy dose of professional reading.
