Discussion at faculty Facebook group regarding the syllabus directions for students’ work in online class:
how many hours of regular student work do you think is appropriate to expect from students for an online course of this nature? The class would normally have 3 hours of in-class instruction.

For a few years I’ve considered mastery learning but the lecture/exam structure doesn’t really allow that. Maybe online is the right place to do it. In this case I imagine a rather large amount of practice/homework, quizzes and tests are required so students can practice until they are confident, and take a quiz or test and repeat quizzes/tests with different randomized questions and only move on when they achieve say 80% or 90% mastery. How we assess those tests will be a completely different question. There are faculty on campus who do mastery with D2L. Would be great to reach out to them for comments.
