Integrating other technologies in D2L
Q: I have assigned six quizzes, but would like the one with the lowest grade to be dropped for the final grading of the quizzes. How do I do that?
A: Make sure that the quizzes are under a grade category and condition the grade category to exclude the quizz with the lowest score.
D2L Update
This update will include information on D2L Version 10.3 upgrade, testing for the upgrade, and D2L tools.
D2L will be upgraded to version 10.3 (includes version 10.2 as well) on May 30 beginning at 10 p.m. The upgrade will provide the following benefits:
· Quiz and Survey edit/create screens re-organized with new layout
· Discussion tool revamped with new navigation to improve flow
· Content tool will be the central/starting point of activity for teacher and learner
· Content navigation improvements for viewing progress
· A full listing of improvements can be viewed at community.desire2learn.com
You can review all of the planned changes in this upgrade by viewing D2L’s “Learning Environment 10.3 Features Guide” at available at the D2L Community Site. In order to do so, you need a user account to get access to D2L’s documentation. To login or create an account please visit: https://community.desire2learn.com/login/.
Select the Enrollment link to create a new account.
Once you are successfully logged into D2L’s Community Site, select the “Documentation” link on the top navigation bar to access the Desire2Learn 10.3 Resource Center. (snapshot desirable here)

There will be a D2L version 10.3 testing period available for faculty before the May 30th upgrade, which will start towards the end of April. Additional information will be send out regarding how to participate in this testing period.

Q: the CMS (D2L) kicked out my students in the middle of their test (quiz). How can I let them take the quiz again?

SideVibe is a cloud-based tool similar to Evernote https://evernote.com and Diigo https://www.diigo.com, which successfully took over the bookmarking Delicious https://delicious.com/
Besides “anwhere/anytime” bookmarks, the new generation of Diigo, Evernote and SideVibe offer taking, of screen snapshot, notes, drawings etc., thus making them perfect for educational purposes

Open or free learner response software (i.e. BYOD clickers)?

I am currently preparing for next semester. A learner response system allows the instructor (or presenting students) to easily interact with a large audience by posing questions or problem statements, and then collecting all responses which can be shown in real-time on the projection screen. In particular, a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) system is one that only needs software (such as Learning Catalytics) and runs on any smartphone or tablet with internet access, which the students already have.
So far, I have not found a free learner response system (or “clicker”). I like the features of Learning Catalytics, but it’s difficult to convince students or the department to spend that much money (12$ per student). Also, the professor (and I also) categorically dislike any non-free solutions (many of us in Computer-Science are big fans of open-source, especially when it comes to the essentials, such as education).
Please note: This might not seem much to American education, but it is in most other countries, especially when that’s the price of a text book and even enrollment. After all, education should ideally be free (feel free to argue with me privately if you disagree).

Update on D2L issues in Chrome browser:
Chrome 32 has resolved the issue with miniature-sized frames inside some D2L tools.
Chrome 32 has introduced a new issue with D2L at screens that bring up a separate window with a list of options, such as “Insert Quicklinks”. After a lengthy wait time, a blank window displays in the pop-up and does not populate with information.
D2L has identified this as a browser bug that Google Chrome intends to fix in version 33, but preliminary testing of the current beta version of Chrome 33 shows that the issue still exists.
D2L recommends using a different browser until Google Chrome has a release that resolves this issue.

how does it help faculty? hi end lecture capture. Collaboration for two experts, they can use the green screen. Use the background.
How decisions are made. Is faculty involved. This center is one time deal, money spent on production. Innovative technology for $40K. It might be more. No time to survey people what they want. There are other technologies which people can try out and then expand on them.
Bunch of smart boards, but not sure if people are. Using them. Software and apps only here at the CETL, not on the. Rest of the campus. People will try but get stuck with that technology Only.
