Research Suggests Students Learn More When Collaborating in Virtual Reality Games

In the research project led by Ph.D. candidate Gabriel Culbertson, 48 students were recruited to play two versions of the game. In one group, students were connected via a chat interface with another player who could, if they wanted, offer advice on how to play. The second group played a version of the game in which they were definitely required to collaborate on quests.
The research group found the students in the second so-called “high-interdependence” group spent more time communicating and, as a consequence, learned more words.
The research then expanded to a larger group of 186 Reddit users who were learning Japanese. After reviewing gameplay logs, interviews and Reddit posts, they found that those who spent the most time engaged in the game learned more new words and phrases.
The Cornell research team presented its research results at the Association for Computing Machinery Conference on Human-Computer Interaction in May in San Jose, CA.

State-of-the-art education software often doesn’t help students learn more, study finds
2 lessons from the most rigorous study to date of “adaptive-learning” courseware at colleges and universities
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation sought to find out, and gave money to 14 colleges and universities to test some of the most popular “adaptive learning” software in the marketplace, including products from a Pearson-Knewton joint venture, from a unit of McGraw-Hill Education called ALEKS and from the Open Learning Initiative. Most of the universities combined the software with human instruction, but a few courses were delivered entirely online. Almost 20,000 college students and 300 instructors participated in the experiment over the course of three terms between 2013 and 2015. It’s probably the largest and most rigorous study of adaptive learning to date.
Although the study was conducted exclusively at colleges and universities, Means said she suspects researchers would find similar results with adaptive software used at elementary, middle and high schools.

- During our March 11th FridayLive! event, Irene Knokh helped us explore the flipped classroom. There was interest expressed in building a flipped classroom toolkit.
- On March 17th TLT Members were invited to start this work.
- On March 24th TLT Members met and decided to create a Flipped/Blended Learning Series.
- On March 31st the planning continued and the 3 part series has begun to take shape.
- In April we decided to focus on 2 events.
- On April 27th we finalized the dates (May 27 and June 24th) and began to design the first session.
