AR/VR collaboration

Campfire announces summer Demo Days to allow companies to experience its AR and VR platform

https://www.auganix.org/campfire-announces-summer-demo-days-to-allow-companies-to-experience-its-ar-and-vr-platform/

Space is limited so enterprise guests can register here to request an invitation for the below events:

  • July 14, Brooklyn,  9AM – 7PM
  • August 11, Austin, 9AM – 7PM
  • September 8, San Francisco, CA  9AM – 7PM

Campfire brings a new approach to AR/VR collaboration with innovative devices and applications designed to visualize and collaborate with 3D models and data. The company states that the resulting experience helps to advance the visual experience, ease-of-use, and workflow integration for users. Features of the Campfire platform include:

  • The Campfire Headset, which has a 92° diagonal field-of-view in AR, and a new level of comfort in VR;
  • The Campfire Console acts like a holographic projector to bring the intuitiveness and robustness of traditional monitors to shared holographic experiences;
  • The Campfire Pack turns a phone into a hand held controller to reduce the learning curve of dedicated controllers and gestural interfaces;
  • The Campfire Scenes app enables users to create, share, and control scenes composed from 40+ types of CAD/3D files;
  • The Campfire Viewer app enables users to work within 3D scenes alone or during video calls using a Campfire Headset, tablet, or phone.

Positive deviants

‘Positive deviants’: Why rebellious workers spark great ideas

https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20210528-positive-deviants-why-rebellious-workers-spark-gr-ideas

Organisations tend to see rebels as troublemakers – but suppressing these individuals and their ideas could backfire.

There is psychological evidence that rebelliousness is essential for creativity. Harvard psychiatrist Albert Rothenberg spent more than five decades researching individuals who had made ground-breaking contributions to science, literature and the arts, seeking to understand what drove their creativity.

To investigate the benefits of rebelliousness further, a team led by Paraskevas Petrou at the Erasmus University Rotterdam recently surveyed 156 employees from various industries in the Netherlands. They measured rebelliousness via a questionnaire that asked participants to rate their agreement with statements such as:

  • I break rules
  • I know how to get around the rules
  • I use swear words
  • I resist authority

If they are committed to creativity, leaders should take practical steps to ensure that progress is achievable, ensuring that the “rebels” have the available space, funding and time to pursue innovative ideas that may appear crazy, unwarranted or out of place at the time, but that could subsequently save the organisation.

AR for Remote Access and Skill Retention

Manufacturers set the pace in the Augmented Reality race

Vuforia® Expert Capture Technology and Microsoft’s HoloLens glasses were used to create a virtual guide hosted in the cloud and then accessed by engineers in a number of factories across the UK

Industry has been searching for some time for an answer to an ageing workforce and the worrying scenario of traditional engineering skills being potentially lost forever.

AR can be used to record skills as engineers are performing them, saving them in the Cloud for generations to come – almost like a virtual technical library.

Importantly, these instructions can be delivered at the point of use, which has been proven to speed up learning.

Medicine & Mindfulness

Medicine & Mindfulness: How VR Training Is Helping Healthcare Through The Pandemic

https://www.forbes.com/sites/charlestowersclark/2021/02/19/medicine–mindfulness-how-vr-training-is-helping-healthcare-through-the-pandemic/

Virtual Reality (VR) training tools are here to help, ensuring that healthcare professionals can be trained remotely, immersively, and more thoroughly than traditional methods for both front-line medicine and in specialist procedures.

use of wearable contact tracing sensors or VR training tools in the education sector and in an high-pressure medical context

Their VR platform uses personalized prediction software and “gamification and varied content formats to engage users and embed knowledge”, and has been used to “deliver typically labor-intensive training quickly and at scale”

“VR enables medics to immerse themselves in these infrequent scenarios, and can reduce skill fade by 52% and improve learning retention rates by up to 75% (compared to 10% for traditional methods),”

Simulated virtual learning can also ease the psychological burden of notoriously intensive medical training and place more emphasis on wellbeing.

Apple headset

Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset will reportedly weigh less than an iPhone

Ming-Chi Kuo says it will weigh less than 150 grams

A weight of 150 grams would make Apple’s headset lighter than the Oculus Quest 2 (503 grams), Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 (645 grams), and the Valve Index (809 grams). It would be lighter than Google’s Daydream View, a fabric VR headset designed to hold your phone, which weighed 220 grams. The headset could even be lighter than your iPhone, given that the standard iPhone 12 weighs 164 grams.

The headset, codenamed “N301,” may also have 8K displays, eye-tracking technology, and more than a dozen cameras to both track your hand movements and capture footage that can be displayed inside the headsetapp

practise medicine in VR

Virtual reality has found a new role: Teaching doctors to deal with patients

Medical students and junior doctors are increasingly learning to practise medicine in VR

https://blog.stcloudstate.edu/ims/2021/03/10/journal-of-applied-instructional-design-jaid/

While COVID is driving clinical learning to VR, the teaching of human anatomy — which typically takes place in the early years of a medical degree — has already shifted to virtual reality in some universities. Case Western Reserve University’s medical school, for example, had been teaching anatomy on campus through content on Microsoft Hololens, rather than by dissecting cadavers as many universities do. Now, with students unable to come onto campus, the university has shipped headsets to students at home so they can continue learning at home.

AR VR engineering education

Using AR/VR for Innovative Engineering Education

The use of AR/VR in educational settings is on the rise, paving the way for new careers and a workforce trained to embrace technology.

If projections stay on track, the global spending on educational AR/VR is expected to rise from $1.8 billion to $12.6 billion over the next four years.

Screen Shot 2021-01-25 at 12.05.19 pm

the International Data Corporation (IDC) released a report indicating that the pandemic has fueled an impressive forecast of worldwide expenditures on AR/VR, which are expected to grow from $12 billion in 2020 to $72.8 billion by 2024.
