EdTech Creator Challenge

The EdTech Creator Challenge Creator Challenge is for creators leveraging immersive technology and real-time 3D to make learning and education more accessible to ALL. This includes organizations such as:

  • Workforce development / Professional Learning
  • Higher education institutions
  • EdTech creators (serving the above audiences, in addition to K-12 schools)

1. SIMPLIFY YOUR DESCRIPTION

When you explain what your organization does in the product section, keep it simple. You should be able to explain your organization in a way that a student would understand.

2. KNOW YOUR PURPOSE
How does your immersive technology support your organization’s mission? One of the factors judges will use to evaluate your application is Purpose. Be prepared to put your mission and impact into words, it’s a key element of the application.
3. EMPHASIZE TEAM STRENGTHS
Several questions on the application allow you to highlight the strengths of your leadership team. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate subject matter expertise, experience, and passion.
4. DON’T DELAY
Early application submissions are highly encouraged as the final deadline quickly approaches. If you have questions about the application this will allow time to review the FAQor reach out for clarification.

Robot colleges have de-skilled instruction by paying teams of workers, some qualified and some not, to write content, while computer programs perform instructional and management tasks. Learning management systems with automated instruction programs

The assumption is that managing work this way significantly reduces costs, and it does, at least in the short and medium terms.  However, instructional costs are frequently replaced by marketing and advertising expenses to pitch the schools to prospective students and their families.
The business model in higher education for reducing labor power and faculty costs is not reserved to for-profit colleges.  Community colleges also rely on a small number of full-time faculty and armies of low-wage contingent labor.
In some cases, colleges and universities, including many brand name schools, utilize outside companies, online program managers (OPMs), to run their online programs, with OPMs like 2U taking up as much as 60 percent of the revenues.

‘Positive deviants’: Why rebellious workers spark great ideas

Organisations tend to see rebels as troublemakers – but suppressing these individuals and their ideas could backfire.

There is psychological evidence that rebelliousness is essential for creativity. Harvard psychiatrist Albert Rothenberg spent more than five decades researching individuals who had made ground-breaking contributions to science, literature and the arts, seeking to understand what drove their creativity.

To investigate the benefits of rebelliousness further, a team led by Paraskevas Petrou at the Erasmus University Rotterdam recently surveyed 156 employees from various industries in the Netherlands. They measured rebelliousness via a questionnaire that asked participants to rate their agreement with statements such as:

  • I break rules
  • I know how to get around the rules
  • I use swear words
  • I resist authority

If they are committed to creativity, leaders should take practical steps to ensure that progress is achievable, ensuring that the “rebels” have the available space, funding and time to pursue innovative ideas that may appear crazy, unwarranted or out of place at the time, but that could subsequently save the organisation.

I am working with a student who would like to include figures from published academic articles and books in his dissertation. If he is not able to obtain permissions before the due date, does it seem like this would fall under fair use for academic purposes (not publishing or profit)? Thank you.

How does controlled digital lending (CDL) operate in an academic environment. Can you digitize an analog book owned by the library for posting in Moodle to support distance learning?

Engineering Management Project (30%)

This purpose of this second group project is to relate the concepts of the text to present organizations. Each Team will select an organization or create an organization and present on that organization.  The focus of this project is sustainability, and accounts for 30% of the grade. The presentation will consist of 20 to 30 minutes, a presentation of 10 to slides 20 slides, complete with a 10-15-page paper. The presentation and paper will be due electronically prior to class.  Members will be graded on 50% contribution and 50 % presentation.  The objective of this exercise is to develop skills in working as a team as well as developing your presentation skills.

The paper shall address the following analysis to the selected organization:

  • The firm may a service or manufacturing firm, or one that you create.
  • Relate each Chapter of the book (minimum twelve chapter relationships)
  • The relationship could be made from a topic within that chapter.
  • All projects must be uploaded in D2L/Brightspace by start of class, 9:30 AM, March 30, 2021

  • Developing Your Research Topic/Question

Why Keyword Searching?
Why not just type in a phrase or sentence like you do in Google or Yahoo!?

  1. Because most electronic databases store and retrieve information differently than Internet search engines.
  2. A databases searches fields within a collection of records. These fields include the information commonly found in a citation plus an abstract (if available) and subject headings. Search engines search web content which is typically the full text of sources.
  3. The bottom line: you get better results in a database by using effective keyword search strategies.
    1. To develop an effective search strategy, you need to:
      1. determine the key concepts in your topic and
      2. develop a good list of keyword synonyms.
  1. Why use synonyms?
    Because there is more than one way to express a concept or idea. You don’t know if the article you’re looking for uses the same expression for a key concept that you are using.

    1. Consider: Will an author use:
      1. Hypertension or High Blood Pressure?
      2. Teach or Instruct?
      3. Therapy or Treatment?

Taqtile had a compelling vision for using the Hololens for digital transformation for industrial frontline workers. The goal was to democratize expertise and make “everyone an expert.”

Taqtile’s content platform is called Manifest. It’s an enterprise platform for knowledge capture and reuse for industrial workers—a tool for structuring the “checklist” items for a particular task. It’s unlike anything we saw in the KM era. Manifest procedures contain instructions, photos, videos, pointers, and the like. If that’s not enough, it can also contact experts in real time—as with the BP Virtual Teamwork system.

Information Overload Helps Fake News Spread, and Social Media Knows It

Understanding how algorithm manipulators exploit our cognitive vulnerabilities empowers us to fight back

People who behaved in accordance with them—for example, by staying away from the overgrown pond bank where someone said there was a viper—were more likely to survive than those who did not.

Compounding the problem is the proliferation of online information. Viewing and producing blogs, videos, tweets and other units of information called memes has become so cheap and easy that the information marketplace is inundated. My note: folksonomy in its worst.

At the University of Warwick in England and at Indiana University Bloomington’s Observatory on Social Media (OSoMe, pronounced “awesome”), our teams are using cognitive experiments, simulations, data mining and artificial intelligence to comprehend the cognitive vulnerabilities of social media users.

We now know that our minds do this all the time: they adjust our understanding of new information so that it fits in with what we already know. One consequence of this so-called confirmation bias is that people often seek out, recall and understand information that best confirms what they already believe.
This tendency is extremely difficult to correct.

Making matters worse, search engines and social media platforms provide personalized recommendations based on the vast amounts of data they have about users’ past preferences.

This chambered structure efficiently spreads information within a community while insulating that community from other groups.

One of these, Botometer, is a public tool that extracts 1,200 features from a given Twitter account to characterize its profile, friends, social network structure, temporal activity patterns, language and other features. Some manipulators play both sides of a divide through separate fake news sites and bots, driving political polarization or monetization by ads.
recently uncovered a network of inauthentic accounts on Twitter that were all coordinated by the same entity. Some pretended to be pro-Trump supporters of the Make America Great Again campaign, whereas others posed as Trump “resisters”; all asked for political donations.

a mobile app called Fakey that helps users learn how to spot misinformation. The game simulates a social media news feed, showing actual articles from low- and high-credibility sources. Users must decide what they can or should not share and what to fact-check. Analysis of data from Fakey confirms the prevalence of online social herding: users are more likely to share low-credibility articles when they believe that many other people have shared them.

Free communication is not free. By decreasing the cost of information, we have decreased its value and invited its adulteration.
