Academically Adrift

This week we’re diving into measuring student growth in the company of a leading scholar.  On Thursday, April 1st, from 2-3 pm EDT, we’ll be joined by professor and dean Richard Arum, co-author of Academically Adrift (2011) and project lead for the Next Generation Undergraduate Success Measurement Project.
Richard Arum is dean of the School of Education and professor of education and (by courtesy) sociology, criminology, law and society at the University of California, Irvine.  He recently served as senior fellow at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation from 2013-2015; and director of the Education Research Program at the Social Science Research Council from 2006-2013, where he oversaw the development of the Research Alliance for New York City Schools, a research consortium designed to conduct ongoing evaluation of the New York City public schools.
He is author of Judging School Discipline: A Crisis of Moral Authority (Harvard University Press, 2013); coauthor of Aspiring Adults Adrift: Tentative Transitions of College Graduates (University of Chicago Press, 2014) and Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses (University of Chicago Press, 2011); as well as coeditor of Improving Quality in American Higher Education: Learning Outcomes and Assessment for the 21st Century (Jossey Bass, 2016), Improving Learning Environments: School Discipline and Student Achievement in Comparative Perspectives (Stanford University Press, 2012), and Stratification in Higher Education: A Comparative Study (Stanford University Press, 2007).  He received a Masters of Education in Teaching and Curriculum from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.

From scribbling on whiteboards on a beach to replying to emails in outer space, could a VR headset be the answer to WFH woes?

An app called Work in VR promises to rescue me with an ingenious solution that uses a webcam to overlay a real-time video of my keyboard into the virtual world.

Engineering Management Project (30%)

This purpose of this second group project is to relate the concepts of the text to present organizations. Each Team will select an organization or create an organization and present on that organization.  The focus of this project is sustainability, and accounts for 30% of the grade. The presentation will consist of 20 to 30 minutes, a presentation of 10 to slides 20 slides, complete with a 10-15-page paper. The presentation and paper will be due electronically prior to class.  Members will be graded on 50% contribution and 50 % presentation.  The objective of this exercise is to develop skills in working as a team as well as developing your presentation skills.

The paper shall address the following analysis to the selected organization:

  • The firm may a service or manufacturing firm, or one that you create.
  • Relate each Chapter of the book (minimum twelve chapter relationships)
  • The relationship could be made from a topic within that chapter.
  • All projects must be uploaded in D2L/Brightspace by start of class, 9:30 AM, March 30, 2021

  • Developing Your Research Topic/Question

Why Keyword Searching?
Why not just type in a phrase or sentence like you do in Google or Yahoo!?

  1. Because most electronic databases store and retrieve information differently than Internet search engines.
  2. A databases searches fields within a collection of records. These fields include the information commonly found in a citation plus an abstract (if available) and subject headings. Search engines search web content which is typically the full text of sources.
  3. The bottom line: you get better results in a database by using effective keyword search strategies.
    1. To develop an effective search strategy, you need to:
      1. determine the key concepts in your topic and
      2. develop a good list of keyword synonyms.
  1. Why use synonyms?
    Because there is more than one way to express a concept or idea. You don’t know if the article you’re looking for uses the same expression for a key concept that you are using.

    1. Consider: Will an author use:
      1. Hypertension or High Blood Pressure?
      2. Teach or Instruct?
      3. Therapy or Treatment?

STEM lab for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

My team is investing into the development of STEM Labs for HTC Vive / Oculus Rift and are making them available through the Steam store. This past week, we launched a chemistry experience where students learn to build molecules in a space lab. Our Molecule Builder Lab teaches:

  • How atoms in a molecule bond
  • The geometric shape of the molecule
  • The polarity of the molecule

Since this is an investment we’re making internally, we have made the module available for an accessible cost through the STEAM VR store. I know this group is not for self-promotion, so as a token of appreciation for allowing us to share this information, our team would like to give away up to 10-keys for free for those interested in using this at their academic institutions.

participate in a survey is being sent out to those responsible for managing and providing XR technologies in academic libraries. This survey is part of a study titled “Institutional Factors Shaping XR Technology Accessibility Policy & Practice in Academic Libraries.” The principal investigator (PI) is Dr. Zack Lischer-Katz, PhD (Assistant Professor, School of Information, University of Arizona) and the co-principal investigator (Co-PI) is Jasmine Clark (Digital Scholarship Librarian, Temple University).

An Institutional Review Board (IRB) responsible for human subjects research at The University of Arizona reviewed this research project and found it to be acceptable, according to applicable state and federal regulations and University policies designed to protect the rights and welfare of participants in research

Introduction

Over the past five years, many academic libraries have begun systematically integrating innovative technologies, including virtual reality (VR) and other “XR” technologies, into their spaces and services. Even though schools, libraries, and the library profession all stress equitable access to information and technology for all community members, accessibility – understood in terms of the design of spaces, services, and technologies to support users with disabilities – is rarely given sufficient consideration when it comes to the design, implementation, and administration of XR technology programs. Because XR technologies engage the body and multiple senses they show great potential for providing enhanced means for disabled users to access information resources; however, without accessibility policies in place, the embodied aspects of XR technologies can create new barriers (e.g., chairs and other furniture that cannot be adapted, controllers that cannot be adjusted for different degrees of dexterity, etc.)

Purpose of the study

The purpose of this study is to develop new understanding about the current landscape of accessibility policies and practices for XRtechnology programs and to understand the barriers to adoption of XR accessibility policies and practices.

The main research objective is to understand what policies and practices are currently in place in academic libraries and their level of development, the existing beliefs and knowledge of library staff and administrators involved with XR technology programs and spaces, and the institutional factors that shape the adoption of accessibility policies for XR technology programs.

The survey will be open from February 1, 2021 to April 30, 2021. More information regarding confidentiality and consent can be found at the beginning of the survey.
