“Advising is not just about selecting classes or checking on degree requirements,” said Penn State Executive Vice President and Provost Nicholas Jones. “It involves a sustained conversation that enables students to understand and articulate how the many pieces of their education come together as a whole.”

Canvas as a Learning Environment
Do you have a class in Canvas? Invite me. As a students, teacher, does not matter. I will be your guinea pig and will be giving you feedback. And vice versa.
Here is my invitation for you in EdPuzzle: nobenes is the code and the link is: https://edpuzzle.com/join/nobenes
I have not touched Canvas for good two years. Last semester, I put my egg in the Google “basket.”
I see that EdPuzzle will be adding video soon. I am fairly serious that they are competing with Zaption, which just released Zaption Presenter, which is practically a mashup of video by your choice, either uploaded by you or mashedup from YouTube and super-imposed quizzing feature such as Kahoot: https://blog.stcloudstate.edu/ims/2015/11/19/zaption-presenter/
Google, with Google Hangouts and Google Classroom (Google Drive/Google Forms and bunch other stuff) might be exactly what you are looking in Canvas with badges and EddPuzzle?
Just a thought, I am more keen now to explore w you the combination Canvas/EddPuzzle/Badges

Is It Plagiarism or Collaboration?
http://ww2.kqed.org/mindshift/2014/01/23/is-it-plagiarism-or-collaboration/
a recent PEW research study found that while educators find technology beneficial in teaching writing skills, they feel it has also led to a direct increase in rates of plagiarism and infringement of intellectual property rights.
We want students to do “group work,” to collaborate, and to discuss. However, we have very specific realms in which we want this to happen: the group assignment, the in-class discussion, studying for exams, etc. At the same time, many of us want to put up barriers and halt any collaboration at other times (during assessments, for example). When collaboration takes place during assessment, we deem it plagiarism or cheating, and technology is often identified as the instrument that tempts students into such behavior.
A student may produce an entirely wrong answer, but if how they got there was through logic, reasonable assumption, educated guessing (not just plain old “guessing”) – and they were effective in communicating that process – then there is evidence of learning that I can take into account.

Three really real questions about the future of virtual reality
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/jan/07/virtual-reality-future-oculus-rift-vr
- How mainstream is this technology really going to be?Facebook sees VR as the next big computing platform, but that will depend on it becoming a truly mainstream device
- Will VR really be about more than gamesSome of the educational projects already unveiled – the British Museum’s use of VR to transport visitors back to the bronze age; Irish startup VR Education’s VR app based on the Apollo 11 moon landing; David Attenborough’s work with a special VR exhibit at London’s Natural History Museum; and NASA’s PlayStation VR demo of how VR could help its operators practise using robotic arms on the International Space Station – are among the more convincing arguments for modern VR being about more than just games or gimmicks.
- Can our bodies and minds really cope with VR?

Bryan Alexander Webinar; Learners and their Learning Process
AAEEBL is very lucky to have Bryan Alexander for our first webinar of 2016. He is a consultant to the world on how to understand technology and its effects on learning and education. One of the creators of the MOOC idea — the interactive, social form of MOOC — he is a strong contributor to innovations in education and also a wonderfully engaging speaker.
His topic is “Learners and Their Learning Process.” He will talk for 20 minutes and then will open the webinar to discussion (audience uses chat; Bryan responds in voice) for the last 30 minutes of the Webinar. Trent Batson will serve as moderator.
The webinar is free but you must register to attend.

One Reason the ‘Learning Styles’ Myth Persists
By Jesse Singal
http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2015/12/one-reason-the-learning-styles-myth-persists.html
It’s a nice idea, but it also appears to be wrong. Over and over, researchers have failed to find any substantive evidence for the notion of learning styles, to the point where it’s been designated a “neuromyth” by some education and psychology experts.
